Bassil at the annual dinner of the “Free Patriotic Movement”

The head of the “Free Patriotic Movement,” Gebran Bassil, gathered at the Habtoor Hotel with a large number of diplomatic, political, and party figures during the annual dinner organized by the party, where he delivered a speech addressing various national and regional issues.

In his speech, Bassil asserted that the “Free Patriotic Movement” represents the true spirit of March 14, based on the principles of freedom, sovereignty, and independence, while describing others as representing a false version of these principles, treating them merely as slogans. He added that the movement has remained committed to these principles over the years, while others abandoned them for political interests.

Bassil reviewed the history of the movement since its establishment, noting that it was founded on a foundation of free national decision-making. He emphasized that the movement remained steadfast despite the pressures it faced, whether in confronting the Syrian regime in 1989, during its political isolation in 2005, or what he described as attempts to besiege the movement during the October 17 uprising in 2019.

Bassil pointed out that attempts to isolate the movement have not ceased, citing what he described as efforts to impose external dictates in 2025. He stressed that the “Free Patriotic Movement” has stood firm in resisting these pressures and affirmed that the movement will continue to defend Lebanon’s independent decision-making without yielding to any foreign influence.

Addressing President Michel Aoun, Bassil stated: “I am proud that I acted in 2025 as you did in 1988, rejecting the Quintet Agreement that seeks to impose a president on us.” He emphasized that the movement would remain committed to its independent national decision, considering this commitment a source of pride — even if their pockets remain empty, their heads will remain full of dignity.

Bassil spoke about the upcoming 2026 elections, describing them as a decisive moment for the movement. He confirmed that they would once again resist attempts to weaken them. In this context, he announced the launch of the “2026 Electoral Fund,” calling on everyone to contribute in order to preserve the independence of the movement’s decisions.

He emphasized that the movement has always opposed foreign dominance and corruption while rejecting any compromise on national sovereignty. Bassil added that the movement had consistently opposed failed financial and economic policies and continued to demand the rights of the people despite challenges.

Discussing the situation in Syria, Bassil expressed concern about the repercussions of the ongoing events there and their impact on Lebanon. He warned that what is happening amounts to an attempt to “Afghanize” Syria, something he said the region cannot accept. He also praised the Document on Human Fraternity, sponsored by the United Arab Emirates, which he said embodies the true values of Islam and Christianity.

Bassil stressed that the “Free Patriotic Movement” rejects submission to any external pressures, affirming that they will continue to act constructively and positively, both inside and outside the government. He concluded his speech with another message to President Michel Aoun, saying: “The more the movement is oppressed, the stronger it becomes. The more they try to push us aside, the stronger we will grow. We are committed to our path and will not give up our dignity and national rights.”
